Textile Traditions of Bengal, Gujarat, MP & Tamil Nadu...

'Village India' is almost synonymous with its textile traditions and crafts. Weaving, block-printing, tie-dying, embroidery of silks, cotton and wool are produced almost throughout the country, with the main centres being Gujarat, Bengal, Orissa and Tamil Nadu. Today, many artisans are working at such a high-level, they are becoming recognised as international designers in their own right. We can take you into the villages and homes where some of India's most exquisite textiles are being produced. Not only can you bear witness to these ancient techniques, but also participate and learn directly from the artisans through way of workshops and open-studio tours.

Folk, Tribal and Contemporary Art...

Much of India's folk and tribal art is now being recognised as a form of fine art supported by galleries, than just simply as a 'cottage industry'. Tribal art is intricately-decorated with nature-based themes and depictions of daily-living, which document community cultures and beliefs. We explore Bhil, Gond, Warli, Sohrab and Santhal painting traditions, as well as body decorations, such as mehndi, tattooing and jewellery. On these journeys, we will also meet potters, cobble smiths, lacquer and metal craftsmen. Our exploration of India's rich art traditions also bring us to contemporary galleries and we will meet with curators, art critics, textile historians and private collectors.
